For ship managers, procurement teams, and vessel operators sourcing marine blinds for navigation bridge windows.
- Type Approval is a formal certification from an independent marine classification society confirming a product meets IMO SOLAS navigation bridge visibility requirements.
- It is NOT a manufacturer's own quality claim — it is externally audited and carries legal weight in port state control inspections and flag state audits.
- IMO Resolution MSC.64(67) requires that navigation bridge window fittings do not impair the officer of the watch's outward visibility at any time.
- A product without Type Approval from a recognised classification society has no independent confirmation it meets this requirement.
| Classification Society | Key Market | SOLASOLV® Awarded |
|---|---|---|
| Lloyd's Register | UK-flagged vessels and majority of global maritime nations | May 2001 |
| DNV | Offshore sector, North Sea, Norwegian Continental Shelf | July 2002 |
| ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) | US-flag vessels and internationally operating commercial shipping | September 2001 |
| RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) | EU flag states and Mediterranean and international markets | Confirmed |
★ SOLASOLV® is the only marine anti-glare screen in the world to hold all four Type Approvals simultaneously.
Request the actual certificate BEFORE placing the purchase order — not after delivery.
- Name and logo of the issuing classification society is shown
- Specific product name and model is named on the certificate
- Manufacturer's name and address is stated
- Unique approval or certificate reference number is present
- Date the approval was awarded is shown
- Expiry or renewal date confirms the certificate is current — a lapsed certificate is NOT valid
- Scope of approval confirms navigation bridge or wheelhouse window application
CE marking relates to EU product safety regulations. It is NOT the same as marine Type Approval from Lloyd's Register, DNV, ABS, or RINA.
IMO FTP Code fire certification is a separate requirement. Both may be required, but they are different certifications covering different standards.
Type Approval confirms the product meets international maritime safety standards. The manufacturer's warranty covers product defects. They are separate.
Type Approval must be renewed annually. A certificate more than one year old should be verified against the issuing society's records before use as compliance evidence.
| Risk | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Port State Control Deficiency | Deficiency notice issued — vessel cannot sail until rectified |
| Vessel Detention | In serious cases, vessel is detained in port until non-compliant fittings are replaced |
| Paris MOU Database Record | Detention recorded and visible to port state control authorities across 27 European and North Atlantic nations |
| Flag State Audit Failure | UK MCA surveys identify non-approved fittings as a compliance gap requiring rectification |
