Another two vessels of the US Navy Sealift Command were recently supplied with Solar Solve Marine’s brand leading roller sunscreens. The SOLASAFE® products are installed at a vessel’s wheelhouse windows to reject glare, heat and uv light and when in use they act as a navigational safety aid by creating a more comfortable and safer working environment.
USNS WALTER S. DIEHL is one of the HENRY J. KAISER – class of underway replenishment oilers and was delivered in 1988. USNS SUPPLY is the lead ship of the Navy’s newest class of Fast Combat Support Ships. As the fighting ship USS SUPPLY, she was commissioned in 1994 and decommissioned in July 2001, then transferred to Military Sealift Command who placed her back into service as a “United States Naval Ship.”
Because of the USA commitment to maintaining world peace it has evolved as the policeman of the Western World with its role in the territorial defence of Allied nations, NATO, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan and ongoing missions in the Balkans and the Mediterranean. It also conducts extensive training exercises and offers security support to partners around the globe, including the European Union in particular but also the United Nations and the African Union.
Not surprisingly therefore it needs a lot of ships, which in the past have been very well built and well maintained so that they can be relied upon at short notice to be effectively deployed anywhere in the world. In line with this policy, which makes both economic and environmental sense, both the 28 year-old Walter Diehl and 22 year-old Supply recently completed extensive overhaul and refurbishment that included installation of the new SOLASAFE® Type Approved screens.
John Lightfoot, Solar Solve’s chairman commented, “Solar Solve Marine is just one of thousands of suppliers to the US Navy. We are not claiming to be their star performer but we do like to think that we get regular work from them because we are getting things right and meeting their demands, which is something we are exceptionally proud of.”
